Dan Price

Founder and CEO of Gravity Payments

Seattle

Class of 2008, Music major

Price is founder and CEO of Gravity Payments, a credit-card processing company dedicated to supporting community businesses and eliminating much of the costs and headaches associated with accepting payments. He spends about one third of his time with independent business clients, another third working with a product team, and the final third focusing on customer service and internal operational team helping.

How does your time at SPU connect to what you’re doing today?

I started Gravity in my freshman dorm room in Emerson Hall. The entire time I was enrolled at SPU, I was building Gravity Payments. The company has changed a lot over the years, but I hope the mission and vision of the company has remained the same. Our mission is to make credit-card processing fair for independent and entrepreneurial businesses that are otherwise subject to predatory practices by huge banks. We exist to stand up for the little gal or guy who believes in the American dream and is willing to work to chase it.

Which SPU faculty or staff member made a difference in your education?

My entrepreneurship professor, Dr. Herb Kierulff, taught me how to be creative about linking classroom time and project time with my work. This allowed me to continue making progress toward graduation while still running Gravity Payments.

What advice would you give to current SPU students?

As you go off in the world, it’s time to stand up, think for yourself, and decide what you think is right and wrong. What are your priorities? Figure that out and then be prepared to make important sacrifices in support of those priorities. That will help you make the impact you want to have on the world.
